About Suzanne Smith, author of 'The Good Landlord Handbook'

Suzanne Smith is a former corporate solicitor, portfolio landlord, and founder of The Independent Landlord.
Suzanne's book, The Good Landlord Handbook: How to Succeed as a Landlord and Comply with the Renters' Rights Act, brings together her legal expertise and hands-on experience as a landlord into a practical guide covering every stage of a tenancy.
Before becoming a landlord in 2019, Suzanne spent 25 years working as a corporate solicitor in the life sciences industry, 12 of them at the General Counsel level. She manages her own rental portfolio and has a direct understanding of the practical, day-to-day challenges that landlords face.
Suzanne founded The Independent Landlord in 2022 because, when she started out as a landlord, she couldn't find the clear, practical guidance she was looking for. So she decided to write it herself.
The Independent Landlord has since become a trusted resource for tens of thousands of landlords and property professionals each week through the blog, YouTube channel, weekly newsletter and membership community. Suzanne also sits on Propertymark's disciplinary panel as an independent lay member.
Everything Suzanne writes is grounded in what she calls the "good landlord" ethos: the best landlords don't just follow the rules, they provide a genuinely good service to the people who live in their properties.
